The Vampire Diaries TV series is based on these books but very loosely - plots diverge but characters are some of the same. Also note, this love triangle involving vampires and pretty but dumb teenage girls was written a very long time before Twilight...general consensus is that the tv show is better, but these are sort of interesting to read about the characters we like...and fun visualising all those pretty men.
I have read this (and the next 8 or 9! I have no life) and found them throwaway rubbish but enjoyable enough - sometimes that's just what you want!
